Adoption memes aren’t usually my favorite thing. I find most of them far too cheesy. And cutesy. And cringe worthy. I mean, I’m not trying to disappoint anyone with this news, but last I checked, babies just don’t grow in anyone’s heart. It’s not scientifically possible. Adoption memes are often a simplified statement about a complex thought. There are a few that I like, but mostly I live a memeless life.
Of all the “adoption quotes” there is one I like more than the others, which has been memeified a million times. The original quote is written by A.A. Milne in a Winnie The Pooh book, and I’ll admit I’ve never actually read it in context. The quote goes “As soon as I saw you, I knew an adventure was going to happen.”
I think it speaks to me more than others, because when I first saw my kids that’s the kind of feeling I had. We were fostering at the time, so of course it was assumed that we would just be a temporary stop along the way for them. Would the placement last a day? A week? A year? Would we love them? Would they love us? Would we all break into a million pieces when it was time for them to go? When you are fostering there are so many questions, and no answers. The only thing you really know for sure, is that it’s going to be an awfully big adventure.
Now that we’ve adopted our kids, I think it rings even more true. Parenting is probably the greatest adventure you could ever embark on. Just yesterday I fished a matchbox car out of the toilet. Then five minutes later, I fished it out again. I was able to not only stick my un-gloved hand into that icy cold bowl twice, but I was able to impart words of wisdom into an impressionable young soul (I WILL LITERALLY GROUND YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IF YOU DON’T GET THAT THING OUT OF THIS BATHROOM STAT).
Parenting isn’t always glamorous, but it’s certainly always an adventure.
