We saw Mary Poppins today. It just seemed like one of those long running shows that any theater loving kid should see. Plus its closing soon, so even though we just saw Chaplin, when we had the opportunity to get tickets for Mary Poppins we jumped on it.
And in the small world of NY the little boy who played young Chaplin and his mom were sitting next to us at Mary Poppins. We had a lot of fun chatting with them during intermission.
Of course both kids really enjoyed the show. This was definitely Mariyah’s speed (though James loved it too). Mariyah was laughing hysterically throughout, clapping along with the music, and quietly singing the songs. The only part she did not like was when the mean nanny comes. She refused to laugh at any scene involving the mean nanny. At the end during the bows she also refused to clap for the mean nanny. James kept telling her “It’s just an actor Mariyah, I bet she’s nice in real life!” But she wouldn’t have it. She even went so far as to yell “Stop! Stop! She is bad! She very very bad!” to all the surrounding theatergoers who were applauding. She sat there with arms angrily crossed in a very solemn display of solidarity towards Mary.
We hit up the stage door afterwards to meet the actors. The lady who currently plays Mary has blonde hair. I thought Mariyah would be overjoyed to meet Mary, but when she came to sign our playbill Mariyah called her a liar. Apparently Mariyah can’t grasp that Mary could be wearing a wig in the show but be blonde in real life. Mariyah decided it was the mean nanny pretending to be Mary. The real Mary even sang us a few lines but Mariyah just kept saying “No, you’re trying to trick us!” Oy. At least the actress seemed to find it funny.
